General Schedule (56 days):

First part: May 14- May 21

First experience in teaching English as a second language, cultural adaptation, local and regional visits, cultural visits and exchanges in Hangzhou, Shaoxing, and several other cities and towns in Zhejiang Province.

Second part: May 22- June 3

1) Intensive classroom theoretical and conceptual field education and classroom teaching observation, and classroom discussion at Suzhou University. 2) Chinese language 3) Chinese Culture

Third part: June 3- June 9

Service learning in teaching English as a second language at local elementary school or secondary school

Graduation ceremony in Suzhou University, final paper turn-in

Forth part: Cultural and language exchanges, lectures, regional cultural visits at Nantong University: June 12 – June 16

Fifth Part June 17-July 6

Service Leaning plus intensive traveling in East, Center, North, Northwest of China, language and culture exchanges with Chinese students, and academic lectures.

During the trip, job interview will be conducted by the hiring institutions.

Forth Part: (optional follow-up component): July 7 – Aug. 5

Paticipate in Summer Camp(s) to teach English as a second language.

1. The follow-up component of this program is optional and it is designed mainly for those who want to teach in the near future in China in order to receive more practical training and satisfy the requirement of Chinese government for foreign English teachers in China.

2. To participate in teaching in one or two summer camps is totally free of charge, i.e., students will receive free housing, food, and certain local visits plus a small amount of payment.

The program offers Cultural and language classes with 12 credit hours. The fee of the obligatory part of the program includes all international and national transportations by air, train and tourist bus with air-conditioning, accommodation of three star hotel or above, cultural tours, museums, arts, factures, industrial parks, markets, artifacts, visits, historical and anthropological sightseeing visits, artistic shows, banquets, and multi-cultural and international exchange activities.

P.S.

Students are required to return to the hotel before 11:00pm except on Friday and Saturday. On Friday, Saturday, and during the trips, students are required to return to the own residence before 12:00am.
Weekend traveling schedule is arranged by the program director.
Afternoon Lectures last about two hours (including translation time if necessary), and lectures in other places will last from one to two hours (including translation time).

Service Learning in Suzhou City and Intensive classroom theoretical and conceptual field education and classroom teaching observation, and discussion at Suzhou University plus Cultural and Language Exchange in Zhejiang and Jiangsu Provinces, including cultural visits of Hangzhou, Shaoxin, Shanghai, Wuxi, and other cities.

Goals of this language and culture exchange:

For Chinese students:

1. To give the students opportunity to emerge into a real language and cultural context and environment in order to encourage the students in foreign language study.

2. To exam and improve the students comprehension and oral production ability of both languages.

3. To test and improve the lexicon, fluency, grammar, and pronunciation of the students’ language skills.

4. To give the Chinese students the first opportunity to understand the foreign cultures, civilizations, and habits.

5. To enlarge students’ international and global knowledge.

6. To enhance and promote the international comprehension, understanding, and friendship.

7. To prepare to enter the global society and family in the future.

For ASU students:

1. Give students opportunity to know deeper Chinese culture and society.

2. Give students to use Chinese language in every day life.

3. Students have one-hour regular Chinese language class every day.

4. Promote international comprehension.

Requirements for participation:

1. Must follow all the university rules and regulations, and local school regulations.

2. Must be cooperative and interested in language and culture studies.

3. Must take active part in both in-class and out-class activities.

4. Must complete all the assignments of the instructors.
